LEAD BY lorene bouboushian
As an interdisciplinary, improvisational performer and workshop facilitator, I am captivated by the underlying motives for any action. In workshops and lab-based environments, often it is assumed that we should follow our “interests” or “intentions,” when in fact our in-the-moment actions are a result not of clear-cut decisions but our relationship to the organism of bodies, room and objects around us colliding with what’s inside us. What do we want and why? What if we derailed ourselves, worked with our own insincerity, faked ourselves out, played tricks? Is it possible to create a realm where all is valid and nothing is right? For anyone interested in performing, from any discipline. Bring objects you are interested in.
here is a more general description and some video of past classes. this refers to more sonic based stuff i’ve been doing with matthew gantt, but it’s still nice to watch i think: https://lorenebouboushian.org/teaching/

notez/wordz
stuff and object and body as it interactz with stuff/object/micz/ampz
value purity
basis of “let’s clear out” or “blank slate” <— is this possible? what is an intention?
feeling uneasy with improvising
one thing, it can be code for something that i don’t think is improvising at all
fractured desire
seeing a lot of flawz
use constructed desires as material
most of it is kind of or really inane
ended with a weird bout of homophobia. but then we all twisted noisy knobz and skateboarded and everything felt okay again.

DANIELLE ROSS
I am a dance maker. My dances revolve around our collective social choreography. I am interested in moments that allow awkwardness, vulnerability, the self-aware, and quirk to rise to the surface, and I am drawn to what we often don’t say. My dances play in this space of the unsaid (you may hear me calling this “the space between”). My process aims at getting to the texture or the thickness of these relatable moments from a new route. I like to think that my dances take parallel or maybe perpendicular paths to things we understand. They are related and therefore evocative, but they are not the same as the moments that make my dances feel familiar. Often, I am more interested in the strategies we use to get at something than that something itself.

"Embarrassed of the Whole (EotW)" is an opera of operations.
Each process has its own context-specific form, researching, generating, and designing forms of social engineering and social construction via methodological practicing. Throughout "Embarrassed of the Whole," PPL are researching and practicing HOW "social constructions" are consciously and intentionally engineered through interfacings, communications, and embodied relationships. We are interested in conflicts between the online and the in-person, between the ontological and the epistemic, between the physicalist and the affective. Tentatively, we posit embarrassment as the only sure symptom of a moment of social agency (if not "free action"), of being somehow other-wise.
EotW is a hole, a cut, or sort of tunnel burrowing across three categories: ONE: PPL publically gather groups of individuals to collectively philosophize and research "social engineering and social construction" in workshops and focus groups. TWO: PPL frame, initiate, gather, chart and index user-performances online through a website of surveys and quizzes, and THREE: PPL form interpretation-schemas to turn "data" from both the publically-gathered groups and the online interfaces into scores, using these scores to engineer live, public, performances.
THESE PROCESSES ARE ONGOING, JUNE 2014-FEBRUARY 2017

Sura Hertzberg
Currently living in Berlin, Germany, coming from Brooklyn, New York and Portland, Oregon. She graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 2012, where she concentrated in Psychology and Dance. Sura has danced and performed with many choreographers and creators in New York, Portland, and Berlin, including Yvonne Rainer, Pawel Althamer, Patti Bradshaw, Marisa Clementi, Nikima Jagudajev, Sarah A.O. Rosner, and luciana achugar.
Sura's work is an exploration of relationship: the relationship between performers on stage, the relationship between the audience and the dancers, the relationship between the internal and the external, the relationship between action and reaction. She is intrigued by all aspects of human relatedness: physical, proximal, emotional. The work strives to break down the barrier between the audience and the performer, to bridge the gap between art and stream of consciousness, and to shed new light on the mundane facets of human behavior.
Sura's interests spans across many disciplines, though she often likes to refer to her genre as "the trifecta between contemporary dance, performance art, and movement theater".

a collaboration between sidony o'neal & 3dwardsharp. future death agency embracez movement, text, light, sound, vocalizationz, and trash bagz as ephemeral fixturez for emotional transcendence; but never really reaching transcendence (cuz, well, we're all right here). the sweat. the breathing. the aestheticz of the cordz. the feedback. it's all relevant and might provide coincidental momentz of clarity (but probably won't, it's awfully dark in here...).

Three Voices
with: Megan O'Donoghue
Stephanie Lavon Trotter
Julia Tillinghast
Join us for an evening of three different voices; sounding and speaking, serenading and screaming.
Megan O'Donoghue will perform pieces from her newly released album "Peshawar." A deeply personal work from the Feminine perspective, the songs tell stories from personal experience and from the lives of female characters within the Hindu epic poems Mahabarata and Ramayana. "Peshawar" is greatly influenced by Megan's life in Central Java, Indonesia, and from touring with wayang kulit (traditional shadow puppet theater) as a female singer (pesindhen).
